Things I saw, things I did

January 9, 1999

I'm kind of lonely tonight.  I just got done writing a long letter to my girlfriend.  I wish she was here right now.

Today, I'm going to write something different.  Here's a few things I saw today.  They don't necessarily make lots of sense or have any deep meaning, but here they are nonetheless:

I stood in B.Dalton, the store employee eyeing me suspiciously.  I picked up a book, and looked at it's cover.  The lure of literature.  The urge to read something different.

The words of this book were flowing and smooth, a stark contrast to my technical and complex Calculus & science books.  I think I'll put that book on my wish list.  "Cold Mountain," I believe it was called.  I scanned the shelves past the As and Bs until I encountered "Crichton," my favorite author.  I was disappointed to see I had read all the books on the shelves.  Then I remembered I will have more than enough to read in the next four months, and left the store.

As I walked the mall, waiting for a friend, I noticed two young girls happily sketching with colored pencils in art tablets, no doubt gifts from their mother who stood nearby.  The pictures were crude and reminded me of the artwork I was so proud of in kindergarten or first grade.  Large circular heads on stick bodies and straight, multi-colored hair.  The two girls shared their drawings with each other and smiled, giving names to the faces.  They looked happy.

Not far from the two artistic girls sat an elderly man, looking into space.  He seemed to be waiting for someone.  He just sat, motionless.  The only movement on his person was a bobbing set of teeth attached to the bill of his white baseball cap, which was supposedly humorous.  I laughed to myself, but felt somewhat sorry for him.  I'm not sure why I felt sorry for the man, but the emotion seemed natural and fit his expression.

In addition to things I saw today.... THINGS I DID.

Someone hacked into UND's network & stole passwords, or so I'm told.  Was it me?  Of course.... not.

Right now I have my friend Jesse believing (via ICQ chatting) that I was the one to hack into UND's network and steal the passwords.  I have no clue how to go about doing such a thing, but I managed to trick him into thinking it was me.  It would be nice to know enough about unix to do that, but all I know is a few simple commands & programs.  I wish the network WAS working so I could upload this web page.  Darn whoever that was.  I want my email & networked drives back!

Hmmm, maybe I should tell Jesse the truth.  Well, maybe I'll tell him later.  Ahh, I couldn't wait any longer.  I told him.
